Off The Wagon

"Country Music Rediscovers Its Whiskied Small-Town Roots"
from The Baltimore City PaperThe year's other big revelation was Heidi Newfield. When a lead vocalist leaves a successful country band, it usually means the singer is looking for a bigger paycheck. But when Newfield left the rather conventional trio Trick Pony, she moved not toward the middle of the road but toward the edge. She opens her debut solo album, What Am I Waiting For, with a steel-driven version of "Can't Let Go," the song Randy Weeks wrote for Lucinda Williams, and goes on to sing songs by such progressive-country writers as Lori McKenna and NRBQ's Al Anderson. On the album's infectious top-25 single, "Johnny & June," Newfield sings the verses with the low-register understatement of Johnny Cash, before cutting loose on the chorus, declaring that she wishes she could have a relationship like Cash's with June Carter, thought she adds a trace of doubt that such love is possible anymore.

Heidi Newfield Shines at Tuesday’s Chevy CMA Kickoff Show

from The 9513
From the moment she stepped on stage, Newfield (former lead singer of Trick Pony) made it clear that she isn’t your typical blonde “girl singer.” With harmonica in hand, she tackled a bluesy, soulful cover of Lucinda Williams’ “Can’t Let Go.” Her seasoned voice was strong, with just enough edge, and she shined on songs like “Cry, Cry (’Till the Sun Shines),” her latest single, and her debut “Johnny and June.”
Newfield’s material was nothing more than average contemporary country fare, but she still managed to let her personality shine through. The self-proclaimed “story of my life” song, “What Am I Waiting For” was full of energy and attitude.

To close her set, Newfield rattled off an impressive extended harmonica solo before blasting into her old Trick Pony hit, “Pour Me.” Some might say that the harmonica is a gimmick, but it’s a nice addition that sets Newfield apart from her younger peers.

Regardless, with the right material, Newfield could (or at least should) consistently put out top ten singles. She certainly has the live performance to back it up.

Gary Allan Stage Surprise

from Country WeeklyGary Allan and his fans got an exciting surprise at Gary’s KICKS 101.5 Country Jam 2008 show in Alpharetta, Ga., when a beautiful blonde stepped in to join Gary and his band for an encore performance.
Heidi Newfield took the stage unannounced and played harmonica on Gary’s song, “Drinkin’ Dark Whiskey”. Heidi and Gary are good friends who once toured together on the 2002 Brooks & Dunn Neon Circus tour. Since Heidi was also on the bill for the Alpharetta show, she felt right at home joining the band. When asked about Heidi’s surprise appearance, Gary noted, “Heidi’s a super talent and she can jam with us anytime.”

Country's Heidi Newfield: Life After Trick Pony

Solo CD Earns Singer Country Radio Hit, New Fans
from suite101.com
For five years she was the vocal identity of Trick Pony, driving the act to the top of the country-music charts and loving it all. Until, that is, she needed change.

Regarding her 2006 decision to leave the the platinum-selling trio she'd created with bassist Ira Dean and lead-guitarist Keith Burns, "I love the road, but when I stopped wanting to pack my bag and get on the bus, that was a telltale sign it was time for a change," the California-born singer-songwriter observed.

Newfield’s not just a Trick Pony

She left band to make more personal music
Leaving a band to go solo is always a risky move. Sometimes, you do just fine (see Paul McCartney, Peter Gabriel); sometimes, not so well (see Steve Perry, David Lee Roth).

By 2006, country singer Heidi Newfield believed that honky-tonk act Trick Pony, which she helmed for a decade, had reached a dead end.

“We weren’t evolving,” she said last week in advance of her appearance at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park for Saturday’s Kicks Country Jam, headlined by Gary Allan. “Even though I was proud of what we did together, I felt we had painted ourselves in a corner both musically and even personally. I wanted to step out and sing different songs and showcase my ability in different ways.”

Her first solo single, “Johnny and June,” is certainly not a Trick Pony song. Rather, it’s a wistful mid-tempo tune that shows a more mature, refined Newfield. And she didn’t just pluck Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash out of the annals of country music history as a gimmick; she actually worked with Johnny Cash on an early Trick Pony album and became friends with the couple.

Heidi Newfield on Pony Ride

Newfield shocked fans two years ago when she announced she was leaving Trick Pony for a solo career.
The band, including bass player Ira Dean and guitarist Keith Burns, had earned a reputation as a high-energy live act and won an American Music Award in 2002. But after going gold with their debut album and generating several hits early on, they had trouble duplicating that success, and they went a lengthy period without releasing any new music. When Heidi finally quit the band, it came after resisting that move for quite some time.

Heidi Newfield Puts Cash in Top 10

from GACtv.com
Heidi Newfield’s first single as a solo artist, "Johnny And June," has pushed her into country music’s Top 10, and it has an interesting tie to her previous life as a member of Trick Pony.
On the band’s debut album in 2001, Heidi and her fellow musicians — Ira Dean and Keith Burns — brought in Johnny Cash to do a new version of his song "Big River." In that process, Heidi got to know Johnny and his wife, June Carter, and that played a role in writing "Johnny And June."

Heidi Newfield - Cry Cry ('Til The Sun Shines)

from roughtstock.com
Martina McBride had originally recorded "Cry Cry ('Til The Sun Shines)" but it makes perfect sense for Heidi Newfield to follow-up her Top 10 debut "Johnny & June" with this happy-go-lucky song. Written by Chris Lindsey, Aimee Mayo, Hillary Lindsey and Marv Green, the song speaks to a lot of troubled hearts and minds in the current economy. It's a song that gives us all hope. It's a song for the eternal optimist because, after all, it will get better. Life can break you down but it always has a way of working itself out. Another thing that the song has going for it is that it gives radio some much-needed 'tempo' during a time of the year when there are a sea of ballads playing at country radio.

Life After Trick Pony: Heidi Newfield Shines With First Solo Album

from CMT.com
Heidi Newfield had just flown back to Nashville for a one-day break from the road, and there were a million things she could talk about. But the first question her interviewer asked her is if it took "nerve" to record "Knocked Up," the last song on her first solo album, What Am I Waiting For.

For those who haven't heard it, "Knocked Up" is a no-nonsense appraisal of that very common, very inconvenient maternal condition. The key lines are, "Here comes what Granny's been dreadin'/A bellyful of baby and a shotgun weddin'."

Might this high-spirited, unrepentant ditty be a bit too vivid for conservative country ears? Newfield doesn't think so.

ALBUM REVIEW: Chicago Sun-Times

Heidi Newfield might be wondering if she should've ventured out on her own sooner. The solo debut from the former lead singer of Trick Pony recently bowed at No. 2 on the Billboard country album chart.
The strong opening-week sales were propelled by the success of "Johnny & June," a hit single with a narrator who is looking for a love like that shared by the late, great Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash. The song's lyrics aren't up to the standards of the country musicians that the title celebrates, but Newfield's compositional skills probably will progress as her career evolves.
